Life as a Mining Engineer Mining engineering is an engineering discipline that involves the practice, the theory, the science, the technology, and application of extracting and processing minerals. Mining's role in society is to provide a vast amount of mineral and energy resources. Other than agricultural products, the raw ingredients for everything else in our modern lives come from mining. The Mineral Information Institute estimates that every baby born will use 3.3 million pounds of minerals, metals, and fuels in their lifetime. There are many options and areas of interest for students of Missouri University of Science and Technology. Our graduates work for companies from gold mines to coal mines; they process lead used in radiation shields and diamonds for our jewelry, they design mines and blast at quarries; they work for Homeland Security and they reclaim land for farming. Our graduates are owners, CEO’s, consultants, and managers. They live in small towns and large cities across the United States and throughout the world. Knowledge of a Mining Engineer You start by building a solid foundation in math, physics, and chemistry. These provide the basis from which you'll come to understand, model, and solve complex problems. To meet industrial requirements, the curriculum (link) provides a comprehensive program covering all aspects of mining engineering. We also offer the option to concentrate on a particular area of study within mining engineering through additional technical electives (link?). During this time you will be actively involved in the Mining Department. You will be attending field trips and seminars presented by industry leaders. You have the opportunity to join professional societies such as SME, (link) ISEE, (link), NSSGA, and WIM. Students design and work at our annual haunted mine to raise money to go to the annual conferences. Here, students will meet and interact with their future peers in the industry. Competitions can be fun and at Missouri S&T we have mine design, mucking, and mine rescue teams (link all). The faculty and staff are dedicated to giving you a well rounded education, one that includes new knowledge, new friends, and new ideas. |
