Dear M&M Academy Members,
Greetings and salutations! We are heading into the home stretch for 2016 and my how this year has flown by it seems.
At our last meeting we met with interim Vice Provost and Dean for the College of Engineering and Computing Dr. John Myers. Academy members had several excellent questions for interim Dean Myers including the selection process for the new Mining and Nuclear Engineering Chair. Since our meeting Dr. Richard Brow has been named interim Vice Provost and Dean for the College of Engineering and Computing effective July 15, 2016. Dr. Myers, professor of civil, architectural and environmental engineering and Associate Dean of the College of Engineering and Computing will return to his duties as Associate Dean.
Dr. Brow is a Curators’ Professor of materials science and engineering at Missouri S&T. A member of the Missouri S&T faculty since 1998, Dr. Brow previously served as Chair of the Materials Science and Engineering Department.
“Dr. Brow’s prior experience leading the Materials Science and Engineering Department, combined with his record of exceptional research and service to the university, make him a good fit to serve as interim Vice Provost and Dean,” says Dr. Robert Marley, Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. “I appreciate his willingness to serve in this position as we prepare to conduct a national search for the Vice Provost and Dean position”. The search is scheduled to start this fall.
Also since our last meeting, Dr. Braden T. Lusk has been named Chair of Mining and Nuclear Engineering effective Aug. 15, 2016. Dr. Lusk was a professor of mining engineering at the University of Kentucky and is a two-time graduate of Missouri S&T.
“Dr. Lusk brings a strong track record of research and teaching experience to Missouri S&T, and as one of our own graduates, he’s very familiar with the excellence of our university’s Mining and Nuclear Engineering programs,” says Dr. Robert Marley, Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at Missouri S&T. “I’m confident that he will bring the leadership and vision to lead our excellent mining and nuclear programs to even greater stature in the future.”
Through the efforts of our Strategic Planning Committee and our Student Affairs and Scholarships Committee, we kicked off our first meeting with student group leaders over lunch at our meeting. We requested they provide contact information, their top 3 priorities and how the Academy may be of assistance to their organization. More to come on this topic.
Please put our next meeting, October 14, 2016, on your calendar now and plan to attend! We will receive an update on the Academy’s 5-year Strategic Plan and our progress.
I look forward to continuing to fulfill our mission, around “Recognition”, “Consultancy”, “Ambassadorship” and “Support”.
